The 90’s Were a Strange Time
If you are a member of Cool Moms of Montgomery County, then you may be aware of Hania Issa or Beauty By Hania, and her cult-like following. I met Hania about one year ago, and my eyebrows have never been the same!
After years of waxing, threading, tweezing, and pretty much destroying my brows; (do you remember the thin pencil look of the late 90’s? I do. Oh boy I do.) I needed an expert to help correct my brow shape and fix the sparse ends that refused to grow back. My poor babies had enough abuse and just said, ” Fuck it Jenna. We out. You don’t deserve us.”
Leaving Hair and Skin at the Nail Salon
I first met Hania during the height of the pandemic. During this time, I was uncomfortable going to a nail salon for the traditional routine of having wax that is too hot being spread on my brows, and then quickly ripped off taking too much hair, and some skin with it. Tweezing my own brows was also a no-go. I suck at it. My un-expert handiwork left my brows patchy and bushy at the same time (no easy feat!)
Hania Saves the Day!
Hania, has a beautiful studio in her Rockville home, so I felt comfortable masking up and letting her fix my face. During the initial 30 minute visit, we chatted and laughed as Hania meticulously tweezed, shaped, and dyed my eyebrows. I casually brought up microblading, unaware that Hania had just gotten her master certification in machine microblading (although she has been microblading since 2017.) We talked about the microblading procedure, and after seeing how well my shaping session went, I was totally onboard.

For my eyebrows, Hania suggested powder brows or the powder effect. The powder effect is, “a cosmetic semi permanent makeup technique designed to create eyebrows with a soft powder effect, very similar to powder makeup. Powder effect is done with a shading technique using a permanent makeup device, which is similar to a tattoo gun.”

Powder Effect Vs. Microblading
So, what is the difference between Powder Effect and Microblading? “Microblading is a tattooing technique in which a small handheld tool made of several tiny needles is used to add semi-permanent pigment to the skin.” The powder technique uses a single needle machine and looks more like makeup, while microblading creates the appearance of individual hairs.
During our first powder effect session, Hania used a charcoal mapping thread to measure my brows, and outline the shape that would later be filled in with ink. We went through this mapping process three times before settling on the perfect shape. The procedure took three hours, and felt like little rubber bands snapping against my skin. It’s not a super pleasant sensation, but it’s bearable. Hania, also uses numbing cream after completing the initial brow shape with the Axys Valhalla Pen PMU. This machine, which does look like a pen, uses a single needle and pendulum motion to create a soft powdery look.
Powder Effect Aftercare
I was given a solution of soapy water plus cream to apply after my initial session. The soapy water gets applied the first evening after the procedure, and the cream is used for seven days. It takes about two weeks for the flaking to stop (you just got your face kinda sorta tattooed so expect some healing, and fight the urge to scratch!) A few weeks later and it was time for a touchup. The second session was quicker, and so was the healing time!
